For first-time users, some explanation may be useful:
A newsgroup is a discussion where you can make comments, ask questions, and answer
questions.
Most people just browse these groups, looking for some news on the groups they are
interested in.
Here is the "Big 7":
comp means computers
misc is miscellaneous
news is news
rec is recreation
sci is science
soc is society issues
talk is talk, every subject under the sun
Here are most of the others:
alt means "alternative" and represents different lifestyles
bionet means biology network for biologists
bit.listserv is a listing server which you can subscribe to, and receive all
transactions in a given listserv
biz is business-related
can is Canadian
clari means Clarinet News, where you can get up-to-the-minute news releases from
sources such as Reuters and UPI.
gnu....I'm not sure what this is....
ieee is the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers
k12 is kindergarten to grade 12
local is local, that is, here in Winnipeg, Manitoba - mostly students copying
assignments from other students(!)
man is Manitoba (surprise!)
pubnet is something new...
to is something new...
unix is a computer operating system
vmsnet is probably another computer network...
wpg is WINNIPEG!
